Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)
Focus group discussions are a dynamic and interactive way to explore consumer attitudes, behaviors, and reactions in depth.
WHAT IS FOCUS GROUP DISCUSSIONS?
This method brings together a small group of participants to discuss a specific topic, guided by a moderator. It thrives on group interaction, where participants share opinions, react to each other’s ideas, and build deeper insights collectively. FGDs are especially effective for exploring perceptions, testing concepts, and uncovering the emotional and social drivers behind behavior.
HOW IT WORKS?
A trained moderator leads a small group (typically 6–10 participants) through a guided discussion in a comfortable setting. Participants are encouraged to share, react, and build on each other’s ideas. Sessions are recorded and analyzed to identify patterns, group dynamics, and emotional drivers behind opinions and behaviors.
WHY IT MATTERS?
The goal is to uncover shared perceptions, attitudes, and motivations that shape consumer or stakeholder behavior. FGDs bring diverse perspectives together, revealing how opinions form and evolve through group interaction. Insights from these sessions help refine communication strategies, product concepts, and customer experiences — ensuring that decisions are grounded in real consumer voices.
IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW
In-depth interviews (IDIs) are one-on-one qualitative sessions that reveal nuanced insights into participants’ experiences, motivations, and decision-making—offering depth beyond surface-level responses.
WHAT IS IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW?
An in-depth interview is a qualitative research technique involving a one-onone conversation between a trained interviewer and a participant. The primary goal is to explore the participant’s personal experiences, attitudes, opinions, and motivations in a detailed and nuanced way. Unlike surveys or group discussions in-depth interviews provide the opportunity for deep exploration of topics in a confidential and flexible setting.
HOW IT WORKS?
The interviewer uses a semi structured guide to direct the conversation, allowing participants to express their thoughts freely. Interviews are conducted in a private setting to encourage openness and typically last 30 minutes to a few hours. Sessions are recorded, transcribed, and analyzed to uncover themes and insights that may not surface in group discussions.
WHAT DRIVES IT?
This method is ideal for understanding decision-making processes, product perceptions, or sensitive topics that require privacy and individual focus.
USER ACCEPTANCE TESTS
User acceptance testing is a qualitative approach that assesses real user interaction to validate usability, functionality, and satisfaction—ensuring the solution meets expectations before launch.
WHAT IS USER ACCEPTANCE TEST?
UAT involves assigning participants realistic tasks or scenarios that simulate actual use. Researchers observe how users navigate the experience, identify usability challenges, and gather direct feedback to refine the product or service.
HOW IT WORKS?
Participants are selected according to target user profiles and asked to perform specific tasks with the product or prototype, while researchers observe their interactions, note challenges, and ask follow-up questions; sessions may also be recorded for deeper analysis, and the insights gathered are synthesized into practical, actionable recommendations.
WHAT DRIVES IT?
The goal is to make sure the product is easy to use, works as intended, and meets user needs, while uncovering and fixing usability issues before release. This approach helps lower market risks, boosts customer satisfaction, and supports ongoing design and development through real-world feedback.
DIARIES METHOD
The diaries method is a longitudinal qualitative approach that captures real-life experiences over time, revealing evolving patterns, emotional drivers, and unmet needs through contextual self-documentation.
WHAT IS DIARIES METHOD?
Diaries are self-reported records maintained by participants over several days or weeks. These entries reflect their daily decisions, routines, and reflections offering a window into their real-world experiences. This method is particularly effective for understanding behavior in context and tracking changes over time
HOW IT WORKS?
Participants document their experiences through journals, mobile apps, or video recordings, sometimes guided by prompts to reflect on specific topics or behaviors. These entries are then collected and analyzed to identify recurring themes, emotional signals, and behavioral changes, and may be complemented with follow-up interviews for deeper insights.
WHAT DRIVES IT?
This method focuses on understanding behavior over time rather than at a single moment, uncovering unconscious habits and emotional triggers. It provides rich, contextual insights into routines, obstacles, and changing needs, making it especially valuable for exploring product usage, lifestyle patterns, and decision-making journeys.
ETHNOGRAPHY
Ethnography uncovers holistic consumer insights by immersing in everyday environments—workplaces, markets, and social spaces—to observe routines, interactions, and contextual influences, often enriched through interviews with community figures.
WHAT IS ETHNOGRAPHY?
Ethnography is a qualitative research method that immerses researchers into the daily lives of consumers. It goes beyond interviews to observe behaviors, environments, and interactions offering a holistic view of the consumer as a person.
HOW IT WORKS?
Researchers conduct in-home and in-market observations, engage in contextual interviews, and may use diaries or video documentation. This method captures emotional and functional realities through real-life experiences and environments.
WHAT DRIVES IT?
This approach captures real-world context and authentic behavior while uncovering emotional depth through personal storytelling. It often includes visual documentation such as photos, videos, and artifacts, and can even involve clients directly in the fieldwork for a first-hand perspective.
SHOP-ALONGS
(RETAIL IMMERSIONS)
Shopper research examines consumer behavior in retail settings, revealing decision drivers and barriers by capturing the in-store experience from the shopper’s perspective.
WHAT IS SHOP-ALONG?
Shop-Along is a contextual, in-the-moment research technique where a moderator accompanies a participant during a shopping trip. It isolates the shopper mindset to uncover motivations, hesitations, and decision-making processes as they happen providing authentic, behavior-based insights.
HOW IT WORKS?
Participants are selected according to target shopper profiles, and a moderator accompanies them during a real or simulated shopping experience. Throughout the process, observations and probing questions are conducted in real time, capturing non-verbal cues, product interactions, and environmental factors. These sessions may also be recorded to enable deeper analysis and more detailed insight extraction.
WHAT DRIVES IT?
This method focuses on understanding real shopping behavior within its natural context, uncovering triggers, barriers, and key decision points along the way. It provides immediate feedback on factors such as product placement, packaging, and promotions, while delivering rich insights into shopper psychology and retail engagement.
EXECUTIVE INTERVIEWS
(C-SUITE, TOP MANAGEMENT)
Executive interviews are strategic, high-level engagements that capture senior leaders’ perspectives on industry trends, priorities, and challenges—informing decisions that shape markets and spur innovation.
WHAT IS IT?
Executive interviews are in-depth, one-on-one discussions with top-level decision-makers. These sessions explore leadership viewpoints, strategic direction, and organizational priorities offering a rare glimpse into the thinking that drives business transformation.
HOW IT WORKS?

The conversations center on strategic themes such as market dynamics, innovation, policy, and competitive positioning, with the interviews later analyzed to extract key themes, strategic signals, and actionable insights.
WHAT DRIVES IT?
This approach emphasizes aligning offerings with executive-level priorities, anticipating industry shifts and strategic pivots, and strengthening client positioning and thought leadership, while providing top-tier insights to inform high-stakes decision-making.
